Moxibustion
Deep Warmth and Nourishment
Have you ever wondered what that pleasant, earthy scent coming from the healing room is?
Moxibustion, the source of that aroma, is Chinese Medicine warming therapy. “Moxa” may not get the same attention as Acupuncture or Cupping therapies, but it is an essential treatment method that restores and maintains health and well-being. It is a profoundly soothing therapy with many health benefits, especially when used in conjunction with regular acupuncture sessions or as an alternative baby-step for someone who’s a bit squeamish about the acupuncture needles themselves.
Moxibustion is a warming technique using the herb Artemesia Vulgaris, highly revered and commonly known as Mugwort. Moxa consists of dried and shredded Mugwort leaves that can be therapeutically used in numerous ways. The most common presentation involves using a Moxa Stick, which is a tightly rolled, cigar-like stick made up of the dried herb. The Moxa stick is lit and the hot ember end is then safely held near the surface of the skin, thereby producing a warm and pleasant sensation at specific acupuncture points and focused treatment areas. This focused, herbal heat soothes and penetrates beyond the skin’s surface. Moxa warms and nourishes the body's vital energy (Qi), regulates and invigorates the blood, relives pain and tightness, draws out infections, strengthens and boosts the immune system, and so much more!
The many benefits of Moxibustion are:
Relieves acute or chronic pain and tightness - neck, back, joints, etc.
Reduces swelling of the joints
Supports postpartum healing
Manages menstrual irregularities and pain
Boosts and supports immunity, thereby reducing frequency and severity of colds and flus
Improves energy and supports longevity
Reduces the symptoms of hemiplegia
A fascinating and common use of Moxibustion is in the treatment of breech and posterior presentation of a baby during pregnancy. The treatment supports Mama's overall health so the baby moves to an optimal position for labor and delivery. It’s best to start these treatments at 34 weeks, but it can be effective as late as 38-39 weeks of pregnancy.
Moxa therapy is a safe, calming, effective, and holistic way to alleviate myriad health concerns. I have successfully implemented Moxa in the treatment and resolution of complicated health presentations and am always honored when I am able to share this impactful therapy with others.
